Smith shot a -6, 65 in the second round of the shortenened tournament which has been reduced to 54 holes after wet weather wiped out the second day of play.

Smith recorded seven birdies and one bogey en route to -10. Smylie, who led the tournament after Round 1, shot -4 on Saturday which included birdie on the 18th.

Smith and Smylie (-10) are one shot ahead of compatriot Marc Leishman (-9), who carded a -5, 66 in Round 2.

In behind the leading trio are defending champ David Micheluzzi and young South African gun Aldrich Potgieter on -8.

Potgieter also started the day at -4, and after a 30 on the front nine, the 20-year-old was -10 and three shots ahead of the field before dropping two shots on the back nine.

Smith is on track for redemption following a disappointing performance in this tournament last year when he surprisingly missed the cut.

It was one of the lowlights of what was an underwhelming 2023 – Smith’s first year on the LIV Golf Tour.

The other members of Smith’s playing group – Jason Day and Min Woo Lee – are -6 and -2 respectively, with Lee only narrowly making the cut.

Other notables in contention are Cam Davis (-6), Lucas Herbert (-5) and Victor Perez (-5).

The fans were up and about at Royal Queensland, especially on the course’s party hole (17th).

During the coverage, Queensland sporting icon Johnathan Thurston was seen amping up the crowd on 17 when the group of Smith, Day and Lee approached the tee box.
